Farmers and Fruit

Two farmers in charge of keeping the town’s food stumbled upon the seeds of a celestial tree that could grant them immortality. “There’s so much work that has to be done that there’s no time to live,” agreed the farmers. So, they decided they would plant the seeds of the celestial tree for they knew that the care they gave it would determine the power of the fruit it bore. The seedling that grew in intention would grant a fruit of eternity, but a life of abandonment and disregard would promise a way out of time itself.

And the two gardeners were very confident in being able to grow the celestial plant that would bring eternal life because of how well they maintained the appearance of the plants grown in the town. They decided they would use the same methods and prepared a place in the right soil and in the right sunlight to place their seeds. “Each day I will find time to water my seed so that it will grow,” said the farmer who loved plants. “So will I,” said the farmer who loved life. And in this way both farmers began the lives of their seeds. And each day the farmers watered their seed in the right sunlight and the sprouts of their seedlings soon began to take form.

As time went on both farmers had growing responsibility caring for the food of a growing population. “There’s twice as many vegetables to care for this year than last.”, said the farmer who loved plants, “I must find time to care for both the double portion of vegetables and the celestial seed.” And the farmer who loved life agreed. So each day the farmers first cared for the vegetables and then the celestial sprout which soon became a leaf-bearing plant.

And as time went on the town’s growing population led to even more responsibility for both the farmers. “There’s three times as many fruits to care for this year than last.”, said the farmer who loved plants, “And I must find time to care for the double supply of vegetables, the triple supply of fruits and the celestial seed.” And the farmer who loved life agreed but complained, “I know we must care for the town’s plants and the celestial seed, but this is taking even more time away from living. Now we must spend even less time living to care for all the plants and the celestial seed.” And each day the farmers cared for the vegetables and fruits and spent time away from living to care for their celestial seeds which sprouted taller and kept growing more leaves.

And as time went on the garden’s growing plants led to even more responsibility for both the farmers. “Weeds are growing around the vegetables, fruits and celestial seed, and now I must find time to care for the vegetables, fruits, the celestial seed and the weeds surrounding them,” said the farmer who loved plants. And the farmer who loved life resented, “There is so much work to do each day that there is not enough time to live! I will care for the vegetables and the fruits one week and the celestial seed and weeds the other. That way I can do my job and live!” And each day the farmer who loved plants cared for the vegetables and fruits, and spent time away from living to care for the celestial seed and the weeds surrounding them. And the farmer who loved life cared for the vegetables and fruits one week and the celestial seed and weeds on the other so that they could live. And their celestial plants both grew even taller and leafier than any other tree in the garden.

And as time went on and the seasons changed, both of the farmers had even more responsibility. “The winters are so cold that I must find time to protect all of the garden plants from the frost,” said the farmer who loved plants. And the farmer who loved life said, “It is far

too cold to care for the garden all day, and I would have no time to live in the warmth of my home. I will only cover enough of the vegetables and fruits so that I still have time to live, but the celestial seed is growing greater than all the plants in the garden and will not require as much care.” And each day the farmer who loved plants cared for the vegetables, fruits, weeds and celestial seed and protected them from the frost leaving less time for them to live. And the farmer who loved life cared and protected the vegetables and fruits one week, then cared for the celestial seed and weeds the other so that they had more time to live. And their celestial plants grew into mighty trees that developed greater than any plant they had grown before.

A full year had passed since the farmers first planted their celestial seeds and already both were fully grown into lush trees with excellent fruit hanging from them. “I have spent many long hours away from living caring for the plants in the garden and the celestial seed because I wanted it all to grow. But it seems as though you have done less work and have grown a tree of equal stature to mine,” said the farmer who loved plants. And the farmer who loved life agreed, “Indeed! I was able to live life and grow the celestial seed into beauty and health without the harsh labor you incited on yourself. You must feel ridiculous, but no worries my friend, you have learned your lesson and can live more life now that the tree has borne its fruit!” So both farmers took hold of the fruits from their own celestial trees and ate them. The farmer who loved plants took one bite of the delicious fruit from their celestial tree and felt greater and stronger than they had ever felt, making them forget about all of the toilsome labor it took to grow the tree. And the farmer who loved life took a bite of the delicious fruit from their celestial tree and the taste of the delicious fruit instantly killed him.
